He Outsmarted Us... DANG IT!!!

So Dustin, Porter, and I are going to Korea in 12 days... Ok technically 11 days 23 hours and 24 minutes to be exact....

But since it takes 21 hours to get there, I REALLY did not want Porter to learn how to crawl before we got on the planes. Just think of all the germs that are on airplane floors... NASTY!!!!!!!

So every time Porter would push up on all fours I'd hurry and sit him up or put him in his jumper- for like almost 2 months I've been doing this. Then the other day I was in cleaning the kitchen and little Porter (who I put in the living room) was all the sudden jabbering at my feet! He managed to move from the far end of the living room, around my couches, then around my bar to be over by my feet at the sink... Little stinker!!!

Anyway, this is how he "crawls"... it's pretty freaking funny!

In this one my camera was reflecting some light onto the cupboard and he got distracted... takes after his daddy!

My Little Outdoors"man"

On Thanksgiving morning, Dustin's family has a few traditions:

#1- Turkey Bowl!! (This year he played in 2 of them)
#2- Shooting out at West Mountain!

Well, Porter and I slept through tradition #1- but we certainly made it out for shooting!!! This was Porter's first time around guns, so his cute Uncle Landon put his Ear Muff/Cover/Plug things (clearly I'm not a hunter) over Porter's ears... He looked too cute!

The best was that we would all try and get his attention for pictures, and he couldn't hear us so he was just staring into his own little world... happy as can be!

Dixie & Joy

My Grandma Gilbert was such an incredible woman, as was her friend of over 50 years, Dixie Edwards. Dixie and Grandma's story of the last few months of Grandma's life was featured on Music & The Spoken Word this Sunday and I thought I'd share it.

"Thanks and Giving Delivered By: Lloyd D. Newell
True gratitude manifests itself in how we choose to give to others. When we truly feel grateful, we feel a compelling desire to help other people. Perhaps that’s why "thanks” and "giving” so often go together.

At least it did for two neighbors of over 50 years. Joy and Dixie lived across the street from each other ever since they were both first m...arried. They developed a deep friendship over the decades. When they were young, they acted as second mothers to each other’s children. They helped each other through life’s ups and downs. When they grew older, they looked after each other. They were grateful for each other.

Perhaps the sweetest demonstration of gratitude came in the last months of Joy’s life. Joy was dying of cancer and could do little more than lift her head to look out the window. Dixie, who had health concerns of her own and a terminally ill husband to care for, determined that she would plant a beautiful flower garden in her front yard. That way, every time Joy looked out her window, she could enjoy the beauty of those flowers.

Not until Joy passed away did Joy’s adult children discover that Dixie had stopped planting flowers in her backyard. She only planted flowers in her front yard, so Joy could see them. Dixie wanted Joy to know how grateful she was for her, how much she loved her. And so even though it was difficult to tend a flower garden in her advanced age, she gave her friend something beautiful to look at during the last days of her life.

What a selfless gift of gratitude!

These dear friends lived the truth that real gratitude inspires us to think and do for others. Indeed, life is so much more meaningful when we choose to live in thanks—and giving—daily."

Dixie and her late husband, Charlie, have been such incredible friends to my grandparents for so long. My dad's life-long best friend is Charlie and Dixie's son, and my siblings and I are incredibly close with Jeff's kids. It's amazing how big of an influence their friendship from over 50 years ago, has had on each of our lives.

Dixie was there in the last few moments of Grandma's life, taking care of her until she took her last breath. She truly is an angel and all of us in the Gilbert family are so grateful for her selfless service towards my Grandma for so long, and now she so kindly watches out for my sweet Grandpa. I am just so grateful for Dixie and for her incredible influence!

Oh Halloween

So... I hate Halloween...

Yes, really!!!

I've never understood the appeal- and my biggest thing with Halloween:

ALL year long we tell our kids "don't talk to strangers"... But on Halloween? Run up to EVERYBODY's house and talk to hundreds of strangers!

Oh and BONUS!!! Most people are dressed up right? Therefore masking any "identifying marks" that you could remember somebody by if something bad happened!

Anyway- there is my rant on Halloween... but my Husband's family LOVES Halloween, so I once again gave in and got dressed up- but it's my last year!!! :)

I always tell Dustin he needs to come up with the idea- but that never happens. So this year I decided with Porter and Dustin's crazy hair- we should be.....

Troll Dolls!

Here's our attempt. Since my hair is short now, I decided to properly "elevate" it. Dustin was the "Doctor" Troll, I was the "80's" troll, and Porter was... well... baby troll? We just wanted him to be comfy so we figured Jammies and green hair? Done!!!

BIG Kisses

Last night I came in to hang out with Porter and Dustin and Porter was giving Dustin BIG kisses over and over- it was SO funny!!! So of course I had to record it!

Slacker!!

Wow I am so far behind on posting!!!

First of all- Porter is now 7 months!! YAY!!!!!

At his 6 month check up he was 28.5 in long (95%) and 20 lbs 4 oz (85%)! Such a big kid!!! He has MORE than tripled his birth weight (6 lbs 7 oz) and has grown 12 inches! Woot Woot!!! His pediatrician is really happy with how much he's growing, especially since he started out SO small!

Porter had a big development the other day- he got his first tooth!!! Yay for teething on Halloween! :) He had been running a slight fever and was super stuffy, but I have been home with pneumonia so I thought I had just gotten him sick... but nope! His first little tooth cut through!

I am SO excited for this weekend! My Brother is law is graduating from P.A. school down in Vegas, so my siblings and I are all going down to watch him. He is a bit of an over-achiever and will be speaking at the graduation- so of course we will all be there!!!

Presents from Korea

My dad has this LONG time client/friend who is from Korea but lives here in Provo. A few weeks ago, Kun Sik went to Korea and swung down to Busan to visit my parents. It was so fun for my parents to see a familiar face from here in Utah! Anyway, Kun Sik offered to bring some stuff home to all of us if my parents wanted to send it with him

So of course, the hurried and ran to the store and picked out a bunch of stuff they knew the grandkids would LOVE.

They sent a bunch of Korean candy and gum (MY FAVORITE) home for all the adults, but each grandchild got something special from their Gram & Bop.

Porter got.....

RUBBER DUCKY's!!!!!!

Bath Time is his favorite time of day, and when I put the ducks in there, he was SO excited!!! He just kept talking to them and throwing them and laughing when I'd put them back on his tummy! He loved them!

This picture is my favorite because this is what he looks like when he is ready to get out of the tub. Bath time means bed time is next, and you can tell when he's really tired and ready for bed:

Thanks for the presents Gram & Bop!

I've Said It Before....

And I'll say it again...

Porter LOVES his Daddy!!!!!

Here are just a few photos I've snapped in the last couple of days of them cuddling!!!

Bop 'n' Gramma Bears Pt 2

It's official... Porter LOVES his Bop & Gramma bears. He lays in bed and wrestles them and plays with them. He always gets excited when he hits them just right and he hears one of their voices!

He was just too cute tonight wrestling with them while I got his bath ready (Daddy's studying for a test... bummer!) so I had to record them and send them to Gram and Bop!

Where's Porter?

Yesterday I went in to check on Porter during his nap, and I walked in and couldn't really see his face...

When I walked up closer this is what I saw:
He has always loved having his blankets right up next to his face! Such a cuddler!!!

Then last night Dustin & I went to the BYU game (GO COUGS!!!!) and Porter stayed home with Aunt Mary Beth....

Gram & Bop Bears

Before my parents left- they went and got "Build-a-bears" for all the grandkids. Porter recently figured out that Gram & Bops voices were coming out of his bears and so he gets so excited when he sees them! The other day I was cleaning his room so I put him in his Bumbo in his crib and he just kept whining. I looked over and he was trying to so hard to grab his Bop Bear- so I grabbed it for him. Then he chewed on it and smiled and laughed.... then he wanted his Gram bear- and the cycle just kept repeating!

Porter and his "Bop Bear"
Porter & his "Gram Bear"

In case you can't tell- the Bop Bear is dressed in a suit and the Gram Bear is in a shirt and tie. They both have little missionary name tags. Pretty cute!

Rockin' Robin

So Porter's new favorite thing to do is rock back and forth- the other day I was cleaning the kitchen and looked over and he was just rocking back and forth in his jumper. It was too funny! Normally he just jumps and jumps but apparently he figured out he can rock too- so he sat there and did it over and over!

New Trick

Porter is officially loving to hold his own bottle now! It makes my life easy- except when he pulls it out and gets mad at himself...
And yes- the shirt says "I still live with my parents"...

Tailgating

Dustin friends all got together for a tailgating party before the "Holy War" (let's not talk about the game ok?)

So before the game we headed down to the BYU Bookstore to buy Dustin a new BYU shirt- and we found the cutest "toddler" hat that we just HAD to get for Porter :)

Family Pic... PRECIOUS :)

Dustin was rather proud!

His hat says "Future BYU Quarterback"- which is what Dustin is already trying to train Porter for...
His shirt says "Start 'Em Young.... Raise 'Em Right..."- we bought him a bunch of BYU onesies as soon as we found out it was a boy- so fun to actually have him wear them to the games now!

Grandma Roach would be so proud!!!! He's a Bingham- Lovin' his coke :) haha

Don't worry- he was just playing with the box- not downing the 12-pack.

It got a little cold by the time we headed home (we didn't stay for the game- thankfully!) Porter's first time wearing a hoodie- he liked them! Guess he takes after his Momma!

4 Months

Ok- so I am only a month behind.... Porter is now 5 months- but here are his 4 month stats:

Height: 27" which is the 93%
Weight: 17.4 lbs which is the 82%
Head: 16.69 which is the 44%

aka- yes he is a CHUNK- but his length is in a higher percentile than his weight- so we feel pretty good about that!

New things Porter is doing:
-Rolling over (selectively- he usually likes to just roll on his side and take a nap)
-Jumping ALL the time in his saucer
-Holding his own bottle
-Eating solids (the only kind he doesn't like is squash)
-Watches "Signing Time" all the time- he loves it!
- Every time I dress/undress him he starts laughing because he knows as soon as I lift his arms up I'm going to tickle his armpits- so as soon as I start dressing/undressing him he starts laughing and flexing. It's funny.
-Still obsessed with bath time! He loves it!
-Starting to rock up onto his knees- which I am TOTALLY discouraging! (We are going to Korea in a few months and I'd really prefer he not be crawling! If so he'll want to crawl on the plane... nasty!)
-He now recognizes when he hears his door open and he turns and smiles right at Dustin or I as soon as we walk in to get him. He's a flirt.
-He smiles and talks and does this flirty tilted-head smile anytime a pretty girl talks to him!
-Sleeps at least 12 hours a night and takes three two hour naps during the day!

Those are most of his new habits! He is so much fun! He'll wake up for an hour or hour and a half between naps and play like crazy- then rub his eyes. Once he rubs his eyes all we do it take him in his room, give him his binky- rock him for a second with his blanket and lay him down. Then he puts himself to sleep! It's wonderful!!!

We love you Little Rock!

"It's For A Good Cause"

Almost exactly one year ago, my Grandma Gilbert passed away from Brain Cancer. This was not Grandma's first, or second, bout with cancer. Just a few years ago she was diagnosed with a very fast growing form of Breast Cancer. After a lot of treatment, she beat that round! (Go Grandma!) Unfortunately due to the incredibly strong doses of chemo, she lost her GORGEOUS hair!

Well, I am pretty much a "Bingham" through and through, I really don't have much "Gilbert" in me- but one thing I did get from my Grandma Joy is my hair... and man am I thankful! I pray my hair stays as gorgeous as hers did!

Anyway, when she lost all of her hair with Breast Cancer, I had really short hair. I decided with the massive amounts of thick hair I have, I should quit being selfish and grow it out and donate it. Well- it was a process! I think I grew it out for 2.5 years? I can't remember for sure. But one day my niece Erika came to me and said, "I want to grow my hair out and then give it to people who don't have hair." So Erika and I made a deal- as soon as her hair was long enough to donate- we'd do it together!

Well- the dreaded (or should I say blessed) day came! Just a few days before my parents left, Erika and I headed down to Stacy's to chop of our Locks for Locks of Love!

Erika cut off about 8"- I cut off 15+"....

So here are some "before" pics....

(This photo was taken the night before....)

Erika & I showing off our long locks

Chop Chop!!!

Erika went first! I wanted to make sure she'd go through with it before I cut ALL of my hair off!

And then it was my turn.
My hair was WAY too thick so Stacy had to divide it into 2 sections... and it was still bending her scissors!! That's when you know you have WAY too much hair- and that's post-baby!
Stacy even let Erika help cut!

My hair takes a very long time to do because of how much texturing Stacy has to do- so Jen took Erika back to Mom's house while I finished up... So I don't have an "after" picture- but here is a pic from the next night with my fam at the Temple...

A little different right?

I hope somebody (or 2 somebodies since my hair will make two wigs) are happy with the long locks they just got from Locks of Love!

Yay for YouTube!

Pres & Sister Gilbert made their first official YouTube appearance! A few weeks ago they got to go to the Korean EFY. The church invites all the Mission Presidents serving in Korea to go. They said it was an incredible experience!

I guess at one point before they left- Mom & Dad were hugging all the kids and mom looked over and there was this group of 20 or 30 kids just surrounding my dad. Mom said it was an incredible moment seeing his 6'2" frame towering over all these Korean kids but just loving them.

Today has been a rough day for me, I have had one of the worst migraines of my life for the last three days, and it just seems to be getting worse. I have been having a "poor me" day just missing my mom so much. Whenever I've had these migraines before, she comes and picks me up and takes me to her house to take care of me all day. Today laying in bed trying to take care of Porter and myself has been very hard. Then I checked my email and they had sent this video. Needless to say as soon as I saw them I started sobbing- and watched it over and over and over. But it is so amazing to see them actually out doing the work! It just makes me realize how important our sacrifice is.

This is e-mail Dad sent with the video:

"In the middle (of the video: about 3:10 into it) it shows us hugging some of the kids. We were able to hug about half of the 960 attendees. The purpose was to encourage them all to go on missions. We told them all they wanted to come to Busan! After which we gave them lce cream" (peach flavored ice chunks) if they were willing to hug us. It was really fun to be there with the youth of Korea. The EFY is a huge help to them. It is very hard to be a member of the church here. But through EFY they see they are not alone.

Staying good and busy. We were off to a zone meeting today that we did not know was scheduled until 10 last night. Cindy had a partially active sister and two sister missionaries over today to make soap (that is what the sister does) and have a lesson."

(Typical Dad e-mail- short and to the point... Love that man!)

Kickball Tourney... Ya you heard me!

Last year Dustin's friends Riley and Kiley Birch asked us to play on their SF Kickball Team during the 24th- and we kinda fell in love with it!

On the day of the SF tourney this year I tore two muscles and a tendon and dislocated my hip... needless to say, I didn't play! But the Salem Kickball Tournament was last night. Technically I wasn't supposed to exercise for a minimum of six weeks... but I've never been really good at listening to my doctors :)

So I played.... the first game went great! I definitely hurt but it wasn't too bad.... then the second game came around and I maybe pushed it a little too hard. When I kicked one time, as soon as I planted my hip popped weird and the pain was back again... LAME!

Oh well- one of these days I'll learn to listen do my doctors!

Anyway- since I was playing I didn't get too many photos but I didn't play the last few games so I snapped a few of the semi-finals.

Dustin taking a break between innings...
Yet ANOTHER home run for Dustin!

The Birch's! Love them!

Date Night

Dustin has been having to work so much lately- they are building the new dorms up at BYU and they had two that were technically supposed to be done July 1. Yeah, they just got finished last weekend. So the last few weeks have been super stressful. On Friday night I took Dustin golfing while Grandma Mindy watched Porter.

Awwww precious!

This is the best feeling in the world!!!!!

My awesome new golf shoes! My dad won some at a golf tournament right before he left- but he obviously didn't need new golf shoes so he got some for me! They didn't have my size so I took them back and traded them for these...

THANKS DADDY!

My new golf bag that I'm pretty much obsessed with!
Dustin got a new golf bag for our anniversary, and I got mine for my birthday!

Cousins That Play Together....

Every Wednesday I get to watch Jen's three kids- today Erika had a "Fancy Tea Party" party so I just watched them up at Jen's house.

In between Porter and Austin's naps they got to play- and I just thought these photos were too cute not to share!

If you zoom in on this one the look on Porter's face is hilarious! Especially since his legs are all kicked out like he is going to devour the block.

Porter's favorite toys- the blocks from Aunt Bonnie!

Such a cheese ball! As soon as he saw the camera out he started smiling!
